Free Money!

Posted by: Justin In: I do stupid things

So, Internet, I need a favor.

Not a big favor or anything.  I don’t need a kidney, cash, or even help moving (though I’ll totally buy the beer if that ever comes up in the future…  that damn armoire is a beast).

No, I need your braaaaaaaains.

Last week, I mentioned that my company is launching a little internal campaign to help raise funds for some yet-to-be determined cause.  The execs are kicking down a bit of seed money to the group to get the ball rolling, and we have until the end of November to essentially “do some good” with it.  There’s a little more to it, but that’s pretty much “it” in a nutshell.

And here’s where I need your help.

Being the sucker that I am, I volunteered to be part of the office committee that’ll end up naming the cause and figuring out what to do with our money.  In other words, I’ve got mad influence.  And while we’ve brainstormed several ideas for recipients already, I’d hate to overlook a great cause.

Soooooo…

If you were in this position, what cause would you advocate?  Do you have a soft spot for the homeless?  Would you build a home for a local family?  Should you set up scholarship funds for underprivileged students?

There are only a few guidelines:

  1. Obviously, it has to be a legit cause (the Justin’s Debt Reduction Fund was already shot down).
  2. Nothing controversial or political, as judged by Common Sense (secret eugenics programs are out).
  3. It should have a local focus (in the Portland/Vancouver metro area).  That doesn’t necessarily mean you couldn’t work with a national/worldwide organization (Habitat for Humanity, for instance), but the end recipient should be in the community.

Also, what would you do with the seed money?  The goal is to take the seed money the company is kicking down, get everyone in the office involved, and grow that money to create as substantial contribution as possible.  With that in mind, simply donating all the cash to your given cause isn’t an option.  For instance, you might use the money for advertising an auction in which you sell off donated/purchased items to (hopefully) raise even more green.

So if you have any ideas, Internet, let me know.  I’d be happy to throw them out to the rest of the committee during our planning phases.  Either post them here in the comments, or, if you prefer, drop me an email.

Oh, and expect me to come back looking for your help later, too.  I’m sure at least one of you knows somebody who can help…  someone with fame, fortune, power, influence, etc. who would love nothing more than to make me look good at the office help a good cause.

I don’t really have much of a brain to help…but I do have a soft spot for kids who have to spend a lot of time in hospitals whether it’s for cancer or anything like that. I ‘m sure you are right there with me… There must be a local children’s hospital in Portland who would have ideas for a fundraiser. Sorry, that’s all I got.

That’s a good one… And one that hits pretty close to home.

There is Doernbecher Children’s Hospital

I worked for a couple weeks at OHSU, actually. One of the saddest things I saw was when they gave me a tour around the campus and I saw a bald kid wearing a hospital gown walking down the hallway, smiling. That juxtaposition between the smiling and the tell-tale chemo signs was heart-breaking.

One of the ideas someone in the company came up with involved a program that would help fund mobile clinics that provide basic health care to underprivileged, uninsured kids at the schools. Really liked that one, too.

Three words for you man:

Relay for Life

There are 7 Relays within a 40 mile radius of Portland, so you might even find one for your neighborhood. Some of the money goes to the national campaign, but a lot of it stays local. I have a good friend back in Klamath Falls who’s still alive because the American Cancer Society pays for her treatments.

But, the best part is they will help you come up with all sorts of fun ways to grow that seed money. Plus, as long as your local event isn’t run by a bunch of church-y types, the Relay itself is a lot of fun.

Nels named a good one - I did this during college.

My charity is Morris Animal Foundation (I don’t know how to link) but that’s just because my dog died of cancer a long time ago and it’s a soft spot for me.

Sweet! Thanks, guys.

We have our first meeting in about a half hour, so I’ll bring both up with I’m there.

I’m pretty excited about this. I’m typically not the volunteering type, but this is something I can get into.

Oh, and I found out it’s OK for me to talk about the amounts the company is kicking down (not that most of you know where I work, anyway, but still wanted to keep it on the QT, just in case). Our office gets $50,000 of seed money, as do a few others.

In total, the company is throwing down $250,000 among the various offices, so we should, company-wide, have a pretty damn good opportunity to help a lot of people. Not a bad chunk of change.

Are there any mentor/education programs to increase the success of underprivileged kids in Portland? I’m sure they are. Find one that shows some success and go for that.

Other than that, go for a Slow Food/Organics type of charity and support that. It may not do as much good as keeping poor kids from dropping out, shooting someone and breeding too early, but at least you’ll eat well at the charity event.
