Random crap

Posted by: Justin In: Don't Label Me!

Not feeling great this morning.  Like I’m hungover but didn’t drink anything last night.  Woke up exhausted, even though I turned off my alarm instead of snoozin’ it and accidentally slept an extra hour.  Nice.

So I’m not even going to attempt a coherent post this morning.  Shit, I’ll be lucky if I can pull off “not speaking in tongues.”  Instead, you get Random Thoughts That I Meant to Flesh Out Into Individual Posts, But Didn’t.

Things I Don’t Really Want to Know About Strangers

I was standing in the elevator the other day, waiting for the doors to close, when three women (two in their 20s, one middle-aged) stepped on while in the middle of a conversation.  As she walked through the doors, the middle-aged woman said “I used to like how it looked down there, but that was like 23 years ago!”  Draw your own conclusions.

Cut Like an Afro?

I get stupid songs stuck in my head.  Happens all the damn time.  At least daily.

Worst part about it is that they tend to be songs that I only know a few lines to, so I get stuck singing “My loneliness is killing me…” over and over until I want to stab myself in the temple.

Some times, it turns out that I’ve fucked up the lyrics to the song all along.  Like the last few days, I’ve been singing “The low pro ho she can cut like an afro” when, in reality, the line is “the low pro ho’ should be cut like an afro.”

And that makes me feel much better, because the way I remembered it made Bell Biv Devoe sound like total fucktards.  (What’s the HTML tag for “sarcasm?”)

Beer and Blog

Last Friday, I went to Beer and Blog for the first time.  I’d flaked for like 86 consecutive weeks and promised Aaron that this time I’d finally show up.

Glad I did, too.  Turned out that this particular week was apparently more festive than normal.  Aaron told me that they had many, many more people show up that night than usual.  And while I’d love to think it’s because Our Hero decided to make an appearance, something tells me there were other forces at work.

For starters, Melissa popped in and spoke about narrative and blogging and Back Fence PDX (which is tonight, by the way).  Look for more of that narrative stuff here in the future.  Or don’t.  Whatever.

And there was beer.  Good beer.  Free beer…  the best kind.

Well, free to us, thanks to Dave Schappell at TeachStreet.  Dave picked up the tab for the lot of us in exchange for the chance to talk about TeachStreet for a minute or so.  And while my loyalties can easily be bought with beer (that Racer X was tasty, hoppy, potent stuff), I’m plugging TeachStreet here because I actually like the concept.  Go forth, check it out.

I got a chance to meet some people whose names I’d seen here and there over the years, too.  And I got to say “hello” to a few I’ve met before.  (And I would have met more people since Aaron seems to know everybody, but, and don’t tell him I said this, he’s horrible with introductions.)  Always nice to put faces to names.

Well, usually.  I mean, some of us are hideous-looking monsters parents can use to scare their children into obeying (”eat your vegetables or we’ll show you the picture of Justin again!”).

I doubt I’ll be Beer and Blogging every week, but I’d like to start checking it out more frequently…  Monthly, perhaps.

Speaking of Parents…

I’m a horrible one.

Last weekend, I threw Ani and her bike into the car and drove to a nearby elementary school so she could run around the playground and get some two-wheeled practice in at a bigger, safer locale than our driveway/sidewalk.

Doesn’t sound like a Bad Daddy move, right?  Let’s go to the video…

I’m a bad father.

She was fine.  Takes a lot more than a little spill on the bike to take Anikka out.  Some scrapes on the knee and elbow, but she was back on the bike about 10 seconds later and is quickly becoming a pro.  Look for her in the 2020 Summer Olympics (assuming she has the time to train between the pro tennis circuit, ballet rehearsals, curing cancer, and masked vigilante crime-fighting).

The “I” in my Myers-Briggs profile doesn’t stand for “introducer”, ya know…

I would have loved the beer and blog. That’s right up my alley.

Aaron – I didn’t know there was an “Idiot” classification! I will say, though, that you did a much better job at Lunch 2.0 today. And I tried to make a more concerted effort to shake hands on my own.

Jacob – Start one! Then pay for me, Aaron, and our families to fly out there for the weekend so we can show you how it’s done.
