Social Life? Is that you?! My God, I barely recognized you!

So the Mrs and I heard about this crazy new fad spreading around the nation and decided to try it on for size Saturday night. Perhaps you’ve heard of it? The kids call it “going out.”
See, as parents of a young daughter, the whole “social life” thing had pretty much eluded us for the last few years. Sure, we had the occasional weekend of debauchery when the kids would head over to grandma’s for the weekend, but, for the most part, we haven’t gotten out much for awhile.
On Saturday, though, a couple of Silja’s Internet friends were in town and we had ourselves a dinner date. And rather than conscript our parents, we decided it was time to see if the thirteen-year-old Boy was ready to watch the four-year-old Girl on his own.
Praise Jebus, it worked!
We got to go out for a Grown Up Evening With Friends while the kids stayed at home. Didn’t get any panicked Ani-just-ran-out-of-the-house-and-the-stove-is-on-fire calls and we managed keep calm enough to only check-in with them 2-3 times. Hell, we even came back to a clean house and a sleeping daughter.
And Silja’s Internet friends were fantastic, funny people who were a hoot to be with (and I’d say that even if they hadn’t picked up the check). They may even end up moving out into this area eventually, which would pretty much double the number of couples we know.
Oh, and we got to try out a restaurant we’d never checked out before, a Lebanese place called Karam. Great food, great service. If I remember later, I’ll throw up a picture of my very tasty Kibee Labnieh (according to their menu, “Extra lean meat mixed with bulgar, filled with grilled ground beef, onions, spices and cooked with homemade yogurt, mint, garlic and served with basmati rice”).
Now that we know we can trust the Girl with the Boy for extended periods of time, we plan to single-handedly start stimulating the Oregon economy.
Ok, maybe not the whole economy, but now’d be a good time to start picking up some booze company stock.
